UTK and Kindergarten Continue Early Dismissal

This will be the 2nd and last week of 12:00 Dismissal for our UTK and Kindergarten students. Teachers are continuing to assess our newest students and transition them into the full day program starting the week of Sept. 4.

Hot Days Forecasted

Weather forecasts show that there will be extra hot days in the coming week. Please remember to send your student to school with a refillable water bottle and wearing appropriate clothing to help them stay as cool as possible. We will follow the district’s Hot Weather Guidelines which you can find here:  Hot Weather Operations - San Diego Unified School District

Back to School Packets

Back to School Packets will be going home with your students in the coming days. In those packets will be information about daily schedules, school calendar, lunch menus, etc. In addition, you will be getting a copy of your current enrollment card for you to verify and update your contact information. It is so important that you keep the record up to date and have your phone number and email address accurate in our system. Please take care that you review the packets and return all required information promptly.

Back to School Nights

Hancock’s Back to School Open House will be held on 2 separate nights. Each event will be held in person in the classrooms at 5:00pm. We strongly encourage you to come without children. If you are unable to attend or cannot find child care, a zoom option will be available. Watch for details from your classroom teachers.

B: Grades UTK, K, 5 and remaining 3rd grade - Thurs Sept 7 @ 5:00p

SDUSD Cell Phone/Electronic Device Policy

Hancock Elementary follows the School Board Policy with regards to cell phones and electronic devices on campus..According to the policy students may use these devices outside the gates before school begins and after school ends. These devices must be kept out of sight and turned off during the instructional day. Unauthorized use of such devices disrupts the instructional program and distracts from the learning environment. Therefore, unauthorized use is grounds for confiscation of the device by school officials, including classroom teachers. Repeated unauthorized use of such devices may lead to disciplinary action. Students and parents are notified of this policy each year through the Facts for Parents booklet. The school is not responsible for lost, broken, or stolen devices.

Parking Lot for Staff Parking Only

Our school year is starting off with many more students which means many more staff members.  Please note that the Hancock parking lot will be limited to staff only. We have implemented a staff parking pass system. If you are not a staff member with a parking pass, please do not park in a spot.  Please do not park in a Handicap Parking Space unless you have the appropriate placard. You will be asked to move. You may always use the drop off/pick up lanes to safely arrive/depart from school. Directions are below.

Getting to School Safely

If you plan to use the drop off/pick up lanes, please review this video on how to arrive at school safely that was made by our PTF.  All of the rules pertain to both car drop off/pick up as well as those walking to school.  It is less than 5 minutes to watch and will save everyone time and frustration as we arrive and depart safely the Hancock way.  Click here:  Getting to school Safely

Here is also a written version of how to use the drop off zone safely: Hancock Drop Off Directions.docx

Please do not park on Brumby Street.  There are signs notifying you that there is no school parking allowed and residents have had difficulty parking in their own driveways due to cars blocking them.

We are still looking for regular volunteers for our Safety Patrol.  Please contact Mrs. Beeler ([email protected]) or Ms. Rachel ([email protected]) for more information.

Ways to Get Involved at Hancock

As the new school year begins, Hancock is always looking for parents and community members to helps support our students and staff.  Here are some ways you can be ready to help:

  • Sign up as a volunteer: Every year (whether you’ve been a volunteer in the past or not) volunteers must fill out a volunteer application in the office and be screened by our volunteer coordinator. The application includes a one page form, show your ID and provide proof of a negative TB test within the last 3 years. We encourage you to get this process done now so that when the need for volunteers pops up with teachers or PTF, you are ready to roll.

  • Join a school committee! The Site Governance Team (SGT) helps to provide feedback and make recommendations on school programs.  The School Site Council (SSC) helps decide how to spend state and federal funds at Hancock. Both committees meet on separate Mondays at 2:30 and we are currently meeting on Zoom for both committees.  If you are interested in joining, email Mrs. Hightower at [email protected]

  • Join our Parent Teacher Foundation (PTF): Whether you would like to get communications from PTF,  would like to serve on the PTF Board, or somewhere in between, there are opportunities to stay in touch with our Foundation. Please fill out this survey to share your interest level if you’d like to be more involved.

  • Join the PTF Facebook Page to stay informed with PTF activities.

  • Join Community Schools Task Force! Community Schools would like to invite you to be involved in the decision-making process that affect your student’s learning experience!

Food Services

The school district is offering free breakfast and lunch for all students this school year.  Visit the District’s Food Services Website to find nutrition information and weekly menus.  Please know that menus can change without notice based on supplies at the district level. For Breakfast the cafeteria doors will open at 7:15.

Need to Report an Absence?

If your child will be absent from onsite or online learning, please be sure to report your absence to the office, not just your teacher.  You may report the absence using this google form or you may also call our phone line at 619-605-3200 and press 1 for attendance to leave a message.  Please be specific in your reason.
