Teacher and Staff Appreciation Week

San Diego Unified School District has deemed this first week of May as Teacher Appreciation Week. Hancock’s PTF has organized ways to show love to our teachers and staff this week. If you would like to learn more and even see how you can help, please follow their Facebook page . For this week, they have  created a suggested calendar of ways for students to show their love for their teachers:

Monday: Write down one favorite thing about your teacher

Tuesday: Wear your teacher’s favorite color

Wednesday: Bring your teacher a special gift

Thursday: Draw a picture for your teacher or make them a card

Friday: tell your teacher “mahalo” and bring them one item from their classroom wishlist

Please note all of these are just suggestions and are optional.

State Testing in May

Starting May 8th through the last week of May, students in grades 3-5 will be working on the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). During this testing period, we ask that families plan to have their students in school on time and stay the entire school day. Missing portions of the test will require students to make up the testing on an alternate day with a group outside of their classroom. We know from experience that students do best when they test with their class in their own classroom rather than with another staff member.  If you have any questions regarding CAASPP, please contact your child’s teacher.

Coffee With Principal Hightower May 5 at 8:00am

Join our Admin team for a casual conversation about what is happening these final weeks of school, including state testing for upper grades and all the various activities for the end of the year. We will meet just after school starts in the Eagle’s Nest (Room 702). Coffee and pastries will be provided!

Fourth and fifth-grade students may ride bikes or scooters to school as long as their application form is approved by the principal and is on file in the office at all times.  Students may not ride skateboards or rollerblades to school.  When riding a bike or scooter, students must wear a helmet at all times and abide by all biking rules as stipulated in their application. Failure to follow these directions may result in loss of bike and scooter privileges. Students of any age are not allowed to ride their bike or scooter while on campus due to risk of injuring themselves or others around them.

Are You Returning to Hancock Next Year?

It is time for us to begin preparing for next school year. In order to assist our staff with this process, please take a moment to complete this quick survey to let us know what your family’s plans are.  You will answer the survey for your oldest student at Hancock currently in grades UTK-4. Snakes In Neighborhood

As a reminder Murphy Canyon is literally a canyon with lots of critters who are native to the land we are sitting on.  This includes many different types of snakes to include rattlesnakes.  Students have been seen climbing and playing on the slopes on the way home from school.  Please remind your students that they should not play there and could potentially be putting themselves at risk.

NEW Incoming Kindergarteners for the 2023-2024 School Year

It is finally time for those new to school kindergarteners to get registered! Hancock will be starting our  kindergarten enrollment for the 23-24 school year on FRIDAY, MAY 5th. All enrollments, new to the district, MUST start online for Hancock.  On Friday, please visit the district’s NSEO website HERE and click on “New Student Online Enrollment 2023-2024”.  Once this online process is complete, please visit the main office to pick up the full registration packet. Packets may be picked up starting Monday, May 8th, and should be returned no later than May 26th.  Enrollment hours will be 9:00am-1:00pm. Students who are transferring from other SDUSD schools will need to come in for the registration packet May 8th-26th-online enrollment not available for these students.  All new students will need to provide an original birth certificate, proof of residency, and up-to-date immunizations. Students who are returning after UTK in the 22/23 school year at any SDUSD school site do not need to do anything. For further questions, please email our School Clerk, Mrs. Beeler.

Save the Date

The PTF has organized another “Family Drive Thru” Fundraiser. Mark May 15th from 5:00-7:00 on your calendar. Sonic will be donating 20% of all purchases with this flyer back to our school.

Water Refill Stations Under Construction

Please be sure to send your student to school with a full water bottle each day. All of the filtered water refill stations on campus are under construction and will not be available for some time. We do have a supply of bottled water available if needed by students, as well as potable water in classroom sinks. However, the filtered refill stations are not available until the construction project has been completed.

Student Absences Due to Illness

Please keep your child home when they’re sick.  They must be at least 24-hours fever and vomit/diarrhea free (unmedicated) before returning to school.

If your student tests positive for COVID-19, please complete the Self Reporting Tool and notify the school’s health office. If you have any questions about when and what is required for your student to return to school, please contact the office at 619-605-3200.

Reporting Absences

If your child will be absent please be sure to report the absence to the office, not just your teacher.  You may report the absence using this google form OR you may call our phone line at 619-605-3200 and press 1 for attendance to leave a message any day/time.  Please be specific in your reason.
