Per the Army Corps of Engineers, the Tierrasanta community and Mission Trails Regional Park (MTRP) had been part of the former Camp Elliot, a U.S. Marine Corps training site used from 1917 to 1960 for artillery,
anti-aircraft and machine gun training. After the camp closed, the Navy and Marine Corps conducted multiple clearance operations including in 1964, 1965, and 1973; but these were limited to surface searches and did not address the risks posed by buried munitions. Sadly, in 1983, two Tierrasanta boys were killed by the accidental detonation of a 37-millimeter high-explosive projectile they found in 1983 in a canyon in Tierrasanta.
Additional investigations and clearance operations have been conducted at the former Camp Elliot since 1984. Even though multiple clearance operations have been performed, there is still a chance of encountering munitions in the Tierrasanta community and within MTRP. While the chances of encountering unexploded munitions are slim, the risk does exist.
