Mask Mandate for Schools Still in Place

Even with the CDC’s new recommendations regarding mask usage San Diego Unified School District still requires all staff and students to wear face masks daily unless they are on specified breaks for the remainder of the school year.  Any changes will come through school messenger and/or a Hancock Happenings.  Everyone’s cooperation is appreciated.

Upcoming Spirit Days

Hancock students, staff and families are encouraged to dress up and have a little fun in-person or online during our upcoming Spirit Days.

Mon 5/24: Tropical Day                                  Tue 5/25: Sports Day

Wed 5/26: Silly Socks & Hair Day                  Thu 5/27: Western Day

Last Days of School

Staff has met and would like to have a last day of school with both the “A” students as well as the “B” students on the last two days of the school year. Students who attend 4 days a week may choose to attend one day either day, but would not necessarily benefit from attending both days as the lessons will most likely repeat.  Students who are online will be asked to check in as they do on Fridays and the rest of their day will be asynchronous learning. All 6th hour tutoring will end on Thursday, June 10th as well.  All students will dismiss at 1:20pm on June 14th and 15th.  Please make plans accordingly for child care:

Monday, June 14th is an “A” Day dismissing at 1:20PM.  “B” and online only students will check in for 30 minutes.

Tuesday, June 15th is a “B” Day dismissing at 1:20PM.  “A” and online only students will check in for 30 minutes.

Summer Opportunities

Last month, SDUSD announced plans for a new Summer Recovery Program. “Level Up SD: A Summer of Learning and Joy is expected to help thousands of students recover from months spent indoors and apart from their teachers and friends”.  Some families may have received an early invitation to enroll at Hancock. All other students will be eligible for enrolling in Summer School later in May. You may go to the “Level UP San Diego” webpage https://levelupsandiego.org/ and sign up for notifications regarding when the enrollment window will open.

PrimeTime Summer Program

All students attending the morning SDUSD Summer School Experience are eligible to apply for the PrimeTime Summer Program. SDUSD students identified in Tier I attending the SDUSD Summer School Experience will receive highest priority enrollment. All other applications will be placed on a waitlist and enrolled based on a first come first serve basis as space becomes available.  The PrimeTime Summer Program will provide an engaging environment where students can strengthen their academic skills and participate in fun enrichment activities within the areas of art, science, music, athletics, and social emotional learning.  PrimeTime Summer Program services will include a minimum of four and half (4.5) hours for four weeks, immediately following the end of the SDUSD Summer Experience school day.  See the linked flyer for more information.

Program Overview

California School Parent Survey

As part of the California Healthy Kids Survey the California Department of Education partners with West Ed to survey parents each year (with the exception of last school year due to school closures).  The survey is anonymous and each school site is required to send out the survey via a unique link. We ask that you respond by May 28th to Hancock’s parent survey via the link provided here: https://wested.ugam-apps.com/wed/ts/Ncya

5th grade students will complete the California Healthy Kids Survey with their classroom and our counselor Mrs. MacMaster before May 28th.

Help is Available

As our country, state and county are seeing less COVID numbers overall and things begin to reopen we realize that anxiety, stress and helplessness are still feelings that can occur depending on each individual’s situation.  People are still dealing with day to day stressors and things that are not even related to COVID.  If you or a loved one have feelings of helplessness please know help is available at the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline:  1-800-273-8255 or online at:  https://suicidepreventionlifeline.org/   There is also help available for each military branch: https://www.veteranscrisisline.net/get-help/military-crisis-line  Please do not hesitate to also reach out to us at Hancock as we have many resources available to connect families with.
