A Welcome From the Principal!

What to Expect This Week

The district has designed the first week of school as a Welcome Week.  An email will be coming from teachers on the modules students and families should attend based on each family's individual needs. Modules will include areas such as technology basics, health & safety, social emotional wellness, and family resources.  Between 9:30-10:30 each day your child’s teacher will be live with students to take attendance and provide welcoming and team building activities for students.  The session lengths will be appropriate for each grade level’s attention span.  Especially for the first week of school.  Teachers are required to attend 10 mandatory Professional Development sessions during the first week of school to ensure our online learning experience is top notch which will only allow for a short time with students this week.

What to Expect Next Week

Monday, September 7th is Labor Day and will be a school holiday.  Starting September 8th, you can expect your child to be live with your child’s teacher anywhere between the hours of 8am - 12:00pm and maybe a little beyond depending on your child’s teacher and grade level. Please know this DOES NOT mean they will be live continuously for hours upon hours during this time frame.  Each grade level team of teachers have been planning extensively this summer, even during their vacation days!!  They will be sending you schedules, login information to their learning platforms (See Saw, Google Classroom, Zoom, Google Meets)  as well as how to best communicate with them via email or Dojo.  Students are expected to be in a variety of live lessons which include whole group and small group lessons. Time ranges will be dependent on the grade level and age of students.  Students will also have assignments that are to be completed outside of live sessions that they would normally complete independently if we were on campus.  Teachers will also have live office hours during the day for students and families to come to in order to ask questions and clarify any work to be completed.

Lunch Distribution at Hancock

We are very excited to notify families that Hancock Elementary will be its own lunch distribution center! Beginning Monday, August 31st,  you may pick up lunch and the next day breakfast between 12 - 2 pm at Hancock. If you have children who attend schools outside of Hancock you may pick up at Hancock as a one stop lunch pick up.  You will need to show proof of enrollment in a district school by showing a school ID (secondary) or a piece of paper with your child’s first & last name, school and student ID number. You will find your child’s ID number in the Parent Portal of Power School when you pick up your child’s materials.  We are excited to be able to provide lunch and breakfast to our students directly from Hancock again!  You can find information regarding food services, lunch menus, lunch applications and more here:  Food & Nutrition Services

District and School Website Changes

You may have noticed a new look to our school website and district web pages.  The district has transitioned to a new website platform. Please be patient as we make changes and “fixes” to pages and links that need to be moved from the old website to the new.  You can visit our website now at

Parent Portal Information

If you picked up your student’s supplies and materials already, you should have received a letter explaining how you can set up a parent access account in PowerSchool. The PowerSchool Parent/Student Portal is a website parents and students can use to view attendance, assignments, and other academic information. The portal is accessible from any computer or device with an internet connection.  In the letter from our office, you were given an access ID and password for your student.  This information is necessary to set up the account. Once you have the account set up, you will be able to update your contact information in that system and view your child’s attendance and grades.  If you have any questions about the portal, please contact Dawn Van Boxtel in our front office.  In addition, here are some resources the district offers on this portal: Link to Parent Portal Information and Resources

Parent Contact Information Accuracy

Your email and phone numbers will be how we will most readily be able to communicate with families until we are back on campus.  Once you set up your parent portal account, you can update your information directly.  Or, you can let the office know at 858-496-8310.

Attendance First Week/Connection Problems

We realize that sometimes there are glitches and problems trying to log in, slow internet, internet shut off by your provider, etc.  Please do the best you can to stay connected with your child’s teacher at the designated time somewhere between 9:30 - 10:30 this week.  If for whatever reason your child cannot connect this week please message your child’s teacher and if you can also include a picture of the computer problem that will help the teacher understand if it is a login problem, an internet connection issue, etc.  We thank you for your patience and understanding.
