Dear Hancock Families,

It has been quite a year and we could not have anticipated the adjustments to our life and school.  We deeply appreciate your adaptability to our plans and we want to make sure you are well informed as we approach our next phase of reopening.

We are committed to opening for students in person the week of April 12, 2021.  We plan to continue providing quality online learning for families who choose to have their student(s) remain online and to also provide an Onsite/Online Hybrid model beginning on April 12th.  We are aware that your decision to send your student back to campus is dependent on many factors including personal, safety and school-related concerns.  

Here is a timeline of what will be occurring over the next few weeks:

March 18 - 22 - Commitment Survey to All Parents & Students

  • Based on your understanding of our learning model, please indicate if your student will be attending in person learning on campus.
  • We need input from every student to plan accordingly.  
  • Your decision is final as it will affect our planning up to April 12.

March 29 - April 2 - Spring Break

April 5 - 9 - Staff Return to Campus Full Time 

  • All classes will continue online only.  Teachers/Staff will be online/synchronous with students for up to 120 minutes a day.  Students will also receive asynchronous work.  Teachers and staff will be in Professional Development and Training;  therefore all in person Phase 1 appointments as well as the Learning Lab in the auditorium will be closed. 

April 12 - 16 - We welcome students to campus in stable groups

How will learning work April 12th through June?

  1. Students who select Onsite/Online Hybrid learning in the survey below will be allowed onto campus for in person learning two consecutive days (Monday/Tuesday or Wednesday/Thursday).
  2. Students will generally be placed into 2 “stable groups” according to their last names, although some adjustments were made in order to keep siblings together or to ensure the number of students in any given classroom’s stable group could be safely accommodated in their classroom.  Parents will officially be notified of their stable group assignment during your parent teacher conference (March 22-26).  Unofficially students with last names A-L will attend Mondays and Tuesdays and students with last names M-Z will attend Wednesdays and Thursdays.  This was to keep students who attend Farb, DePortola or Serra the opportunity to be on the same schedules with their siblings.
  3. When students are not in person, they will attend class via Zoom ‘simulcast’ from the classroom.
  4. Students will receive 180 minutes of instruction which will include whole group, small group and independent instruction.  Students online will be simulcast through their classroom Zoom link.  There will be up to 30 minutes of “wellness break” time built into the 180 minutes. 
  5. Students onsite for their designated days will also receive a lunch onsite as well as an additional 120 minutes of instruction outside of the above mentioned 180 minutes of instruction.  Students online will be assigned asynchronous work to complete.  
  6. Teachers may also choose to provide an additional 60 minutes of instruction which will be up to the teacher’s discretion.
  7. All students will be online on Fridays.

 

What safety measures are in place?

We will present a complete overview of safety procedures, but here are the main things to know:

  • Everyone on campus will be required to wear a mask
  • Students and staff will wash or sanitize their hands prior to entering the buildings
  • We will maintain 6 feet distancing at all times, including inside the classrooms, during wellness breaks, and during lunch.
  • Everyone will complete a health clearance check (Clearpass or paper) before coming to campus each day
  • All staff have had an opportunity to be vaccinated
  • Bathrooms will be marked with capacity numbers and monitored regularly
  • All drinking fountains have been disabled 
  • Only staff are allowed to be on campus in order to maintain health and safety precautions

 

What will this really look like?

Videos will be coming showing the experience a student will have once they return in order to provide some knowledge and in addition lessen the anxieties about returning and what it will look like.  

What will my student need to bring?

  • Their mask
  • A health clearance check (paper or clearpass proof)
  • Their charged laptop and charger
  • Materials the teacher designates to be returned (textbooks, journals, etc.)
  • Water bottle 

If we decide to continue online learning, what is different?

  • All students will receive the same amount of instructional time, regardless of online or on campus.
  • Students receiving special education services will receive the services outlined in their Individualized Education Plan (IEP) in both the Onsite/Online Hybrid and the Online Only instructional models.

Please finalize your choice by completing this Instructional Model Choice Form indicating your choice for either the Onsite/Online Hybrid or the Online Only model by March 22, 2021. Please complete ONE survey PER CHILD, using your child's student ID.    

If your response is not received by Monday, March 22, 2021, your child may be assigned to the Online Only model.  Students who choose Onsite/Online Hybrid may choose to move to Online, but will not be able to return once that choice is made.  This is only for 9 weeks and we ask that you choose wisely. 

We always appreciate your input and flexibility as we march towards our April reopening date.  Hancock is in alignment with the Tierrasanta Secondary Schools (Serra, Farb, Deportola) in order to provide continuity for families during this difficult time.  We anticipate returning to our regular start time of 7:50 AM, but may need students earlier in order to complete entrance requirements (form collection, hand sanitizing, etc.) in order to be ready for instruction with the online students.  More information will come as we will most likely need to stagger entrances and exits.  We anticipate the school day to end at 1:20 unless teachers designate additional time for your student.
